Meet Ingrid

Ingrid Martin uses music to deepen compassion and human connection. As a conductor, curator, presenter and educator she dissolves barriers between musicians and audiences, and creates spaces for transformation and deep listening.

In 2024 Ingrid leads performances with the Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras in addition to her role as New Zealand Conductor in Residence working with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

She is one of five participants in the 2023/2024 Australian Conducting Academy (ACA) Fellowship, conducting the eight professional orchestras in Australia. The first Australian admitted to the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship Mentoring Program 2024/2025, Ingrid will work with ten international conductors including founder Marin Alsop. In 2022 she was a Carlos Miguel Prieto Conducting Fellow with the Orchestra of the Americas OAcademy.

Before her current success on the podium, Ingrid spent a decade training and working in emergency medicine while pursuing music in parallel. As a doctor, Ingrid honed her ability to listen empathetically and decode complex concepts with her patients. Then she swapped her scrubs for a tuxedo. Now she uses her skills in communication and connection to demystify the world of classical music: from creating a sold-out orchestra show about the science behind the instruments for National Science Week to speaking from the podium about how and why classical music moves us.

Ingrid believes passionately that the conductor's role extends beyond the concert hall, to shaping the way the next generation of musicians contribute to society.

From early on, she had a dream to improve students’ experiences by uplifting teachers’ skills. She launched Conducting Artistry in 2019 to share her expertise. What began as a single video course now encompasses books, podcasts and online resources that have helped thousands of music teachers around the world to elevate their conducting and empower their ensembles.

Ingrid is happiest with a good black coffee in one hand and one or more of her three cats on her lap.
